Brothers 4 Literacy Goes To

Robins Hall Primary School In Manchester, Jamaica

Brothers 4 Literacy & Life just completed it's first mission to Manchester, Jamaica in March 2014 to help a rural under served school. This school has a literacy rate in the 60th percentile. In Atlanta, B4L2 solicited donations of used books, clothes, shoes, school supplies and monetary resources to help fulfill a "needs list" for the elementary school in Jamaica. They assembled over 50 volunteers to catalog and cover all of the books with contact paper to give them a longer shelf life and to sort clothes, shoes and school supplies. We were fortunate enough to donate 5 laptop computers, over 1000lbs of books, over 70 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies and a combined 850lbs of clothes, shoes and school supplies to the children of Robins Hall in hopes of making their future brighter. While there, we read, worked and played with the students as well as shared with them the importance of reading. We also let them know that some boys from Atlanta, GA really care about them. We were also able to establish some important relationships with a member of parliament and the Ministry of Education in hopes of streamlining the customs process for subsequent visits and rallying to have some laws change that would put more money into the schools for improved literacy and better nourishment programs. Another component of our adventure was the completion of an Eagle Scout Project by our fellow scout, Omari. Omari exuded wonderful leadership skills while he directed his volunteers as they covered, cataloged and shipped books as well. Our next mission is to raise money to put a block wall around the school for the safety of the children as well as the installation of a garden so that children can partake in more than one meal per day. We plan to keep in contact with the students of Robins Hall by phone, a pen pal relationship, Skype and by visiting them annually.
